Hi,

In the Huntingdon, PA area both of our grocery stores dobule up to and including $.50.  Sometimes, they have special tripler coupons that will allow you to triple up to six coupons.

I normally go shopping in State College, PA because both Weis Markets and Wegman's will double up to and including $1.00.  Again, from time to time they run special tripler coupons that will allow you to triple up to six coupons, even if they have a face value of $1.00 - it just can't go over purchase price.

Thanks

What I want to know is how stores get away with doubling coupons. Do they eat it, have special permission from the coupon issuer, or do they go out and find another (or 2) coupons themselves?

As they eat the profit, why can't they double or triple?  As far as I know, if the store doubles, it is "their loss", not the coupon manufacturer's. Which is also why I don't understand why they care whether or not a store doubles, thus, I don't understand the DND coupons.

Maybe someone here knows better than I.

I live in South Carolina and in my area, Ingle's, Publix, and Winn-Dixie will double up to 50 cents, and Bi-Lo will double up to 60 cents.

Hope this helps!

I worked in a grocery store for 10 years and this is my understanding of how the coupon deal works:

The manufacturers reimburse the stores for the face amount of the coupon plus and handling fee, normally $.08 per coupon, but it is usually stated somewhere on the coupon.  Some people will tell you that the store loses money on the "doubles" others will tell you that they can be reimbursed by the manufacturer.  Either way, they are moving more product than they would have without doubling, so even if they have to eat the loss, they are still coming out ahead.

What I have a hard time understanding is why the doubling policy varies from store to store in the same chain!!!  The Weis Market here in Huntingdon, PA will only double up to and including $0.50.  If it's between $0.50 and $0.99, they add the difference to make it $1.00.   It's the same way when the offer special triple coupons.  But if I drive 30 - 45 minutes to State College, PA, home of Penn State, they double up to and including $1.00, and when the triple they will triple $1.00 unless it goes over purchase price.  I've even had them double BOGOF so that I get both items free!!!  Does this make sense to anyone else??

I'm here in the Frederick MD area, we have a variety of stores.
  Giant Food doubles to .50
Giant Eagle doubles to .99 ( used to be 1.00, but they recently changed)
Giant Eagle will also take competitors coupons, but stopped advertising the fact.
   Safeway doubles to .50
   Weis doubles to .50
( occassionally they will have triple clippers in their ads.)
20 minutes from me there is
Martins they will double up to 1.00 and run coupon triplers every now and then.
HOw do I acces your list of stores?  I might be missing something!

I live in Southwest Ohio, and here, Meijer and Kroger's both double coupons. I do want to add however that Meijer just started something new. If you have more than 2 identical coupons, for more than 2 identical items, the  coupon will not double after the first 2 if they are having their super double coupons. For example, I had 5 Gillette Complete Care coupons for $1.00 off. Since they were having super double coupons, I should get $2.00 off each item I buy that I use a coupon on. I used all 5 coupons, but only the first 2 were doubled, the other 3 redeemed at the face value of $1.00. I was able to go to the customer service counter and get them to give me the money for all the ones that didn't double. I had a total of $13.00 in coupons that didn't double. However, it only did it on certain coupons, some of them did double for every item. I guess from now on, I'll have to just do more than one order.

Many coupons say do no double on them.
It doesn't hurt the manufacture to double the value and I would think they would sell more product.

Here in North Carolina, Harris Teeter doubles coupons below $1.00 each.  If the bar code on the coupon begins with a "5" and it's below $1.00, the register will double it.  Have you noticed the instant coupon machines on product shelves in stores?? The ones in Harris Teeter stores begin with a bar code of "9".  "9" will NOT double in Harris Teeter.  BUT... the shelf coupons in Food Lion begin with "5", which will double in Harris Teeter.  I pull the coupons from the shelves of Food Lion and use them at Harris Teeter and they double, even if they say "Do Not Double".  Today I used Simply Potatoes coupons from Food Lion at Harris Teeter.  They were on sale Buy one, get one free for $2.49... the 55 cents coupons I got from Food Lion doubled to $1.10 off per pack of Hash Browns at Harris Teeter.  I ended up paying 29 cents for every 2 packs of Hash Browns.  Also used TCC coupons on NY Texas Toast, b1g1f 2.59 at Harris Teeter.  Paid 50 cents per box of Toast.  There's no limit either.  Sale ends tomorrow 12/13/2004.  Lowe's Foods also doubles, but with some restrictions, usually between Harris Teeter and Lowe's Foods, the shelf coupons will double at the other store, but not from the store you get it from.  It's worth the trip.  Today before sales and coupons my Harris Teeter total was $48.42.  After sale deductions and double coupons, I ended up paying $14.68.
