Author Topic: One Coupon Per Purchase--How To Interpret That?  (Read 5519 times)

Lately, I have found stores that won't allow 2 of the same coupon in your order. They think that "one per purchase" means "one per grocery order." I think it means one per item.  So far, Wal-Mart, Target, and Walgreen have prevented me from using 2 or more coupons for the same amount of items.  Thankfully, my local double couponing grocery store does not see it that way.

That's when I would tell them I have two orders and you can just check me out twice or you can make it easy on the both of us and check me out once.

Here's one I had happen the other day.  Huggies wipes were on sale 2 for $4.00 and I had the $.75 off coupon making them $1.25.  Not great not bad.  I also had a coupon which read, Buy Huggies wipes and get $2.50 off of any Huggies soaps, shampoos or lotions or Clean Team product.  The shampoo was on sale for $2.33 which would have given me a .17 profit.  The cashier would not let me use it because she said I needed to buy two Huggies wipes to use my two coupons.   But in my opinion the second coupon applied to the shampoo not the wipes.  Which way would you see it?  End the end she gave me back my coupon and took the shampoo off the order.

All she had to do was credit you the $2.50 for using the coupon.  You had made your 2 purchases for the wipes in order to use that coupon.  She was suppose to look at it as if you never had the $.75 cents off coupon.  But then again maybe she looked at it as if you were trying to use 2 coupons for the same two items.  Maybe that's what she did.

to vickib50.

I've had that same problem before too but it was at a Family Dollar Store.  Never had the problem at Walmart.  The cashiers usually haven't paid that much attention to my coupons to read the fine print.  Just as long as it would scan.  To solve that just put one coupon on top of each item and where it reads on the coupon "Only one coupon per purchase", tell the cashier, you're purchasing this item, and this item, and this item.  hahahahhahahaha.  So either she can ring them up together or ring them separately.  It's up to her.

The "one per purchase"means exactly that. One item purchased is a purchase.

I've even had cashiers to reject a coupon because "you're getting that free! That's not right!"  Yes, I actually had a cashier at Walgreens to say that to me.

I'm not sure that any of these cashiers think of labor costs as a viable cost for their employers and to argue over $.50 is costing their company a small fortune, both in BAD WILL, as well as in labor.. especially when they have to drag management away from their tasks to deal with this "small potatoes."

--Rachael

p.s. I like it when the cashiers LIKE it when we get things for free. I've been known to give away some of my free coupons to nice cashiers who ENJOY watching me get things free... a small reward to pay. Most won't take them, but I usually won't do this until right before the end and it's about to expire and so I plead with them to go ahead and try it... "they're going to just get thrown away," is my plea... and then I get them to take them, in hopes that they will learn to share in the joy of this money saving hobby we share... hopefully to turn them into an enthusiast instead of antagonist.

Most antagonists, however, do consider themselves "above" us coupon users, however. I find it humorous, as they climb into their debt-ridden vehicles to go home to their mortgaged-to-the-hilt house so that they can watch their pay-by-the-month-tv... and wonder how they can stand that life....?? Give me my coupons any day. I'd much rather save $150 a month at the grocery store using coupons, so that I can own my tv free and clear!

Well, it's too bad for them that they're not sensible enough to take advantage of coupons and then most of them complain about their financial problems.

Hi All, I am new to ordering coupons, trying to save $ as much as possible.  Anyway, I was so annoyed this morning, I was so excited to use my coupons at the Giant only to find out I can only have one coupon of the same item doubled.  Is this typical?    What's the point of ordering multiple coupons?  Sorry I am just venting...

one purchase per purchase means you can use only one coupon per item.  That is not the same thing as one coupon per transaction.  Wal-Mart's policy states you can use 40 coupons per transaction, I keep a copy of their coupon policy in my binder just for that purpose.

Sometimes you can't train the cashiers on their own policies so just walk away from the sale and politely ask if they need help putting it back.  Later contact DM and let them know about your experience.

Best rant I've read in a long time. Hey, they can look down their noses at us all day long.

Aren't cell phones wonderful. Here's one of my favorite uses, since I don't like to use them for idle chit chat. When management says NO to anything, you can call the corporate customer service line right in front of them. You had better know the corporate policy before pulling this stunt, however.

For example, Harris Teeter does not allow two coupons for BOGO. I argued the point the other day that if an item rings at half price, that's not BOGO, and they let me use two coupons. A dollar is a dollar, and I'm going to squeeze that dollar no matter what. Publix will do ANYTHING for their customers, and consequently, they get my business more than anyone else--even Harris Teeter.

A purchase is always to be interpreted, "the item purchased". It does not mean "per time you check out in line."

We still face this, however. I just have to logically explain to the cashier (usually a young one), who doesn't realize this, that each of these items is a purchase.

Get to know your Walgreens manager. I take them to the cleaners regularly. One day I said, "Well, I'm off to take CVS to the cleaners now."

He said, "Don't you dare. I'll give you whatever they're offering."

It helps to get to know managers. They'll do anything for your business. Walgreens is hurting right now, and they've cut deliveries to once per week from twice per week in my area, so they're amenable to showing more revenue, whatever it takes.
